Complex Sentence

COMPLEX SENTENCE

A complex sentence is a sentence that has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses.

This kind of sentence uses a subordinator or a relative pronoun.

1.      subordinator such as:

•        since
•        before
•        after
•        because
•        though
•        although
•        even though
•        while
•        when
•        whenever
•        as
•        if
•        until
•        unless
•        whereas
•        wherever.

2.      relative pronoun such as:

•        that
•        who
•        which.

Here are the examples of Complex Sentence:

1.         My mother and my father have a nice conversation while they are watching the television.

2.         She doesn’t do her homework because she has to help her mother all day long.

3.         After they won the match, they deserve to be proud.

4.         The boy who stands there is my son.

Notes:

a.         The dependent clauses in a complex sentence can go first before the independent clause, but when the dependent clause comes first, a comma should be used to separate the two clauses, like the third example.

b.         Sentences containing adjective clauses (or dependent clauses) are also complex because they contain an independent clause and a dependent clause, like the fourth example.
